Cyber thieves target Xbox Live gamers
Matt - November 23rd, 2011 11:20 AM
With the PlayStation going down tremendously a few months ago you’d have thought that companies would have upped their security, but it appears they haven’t after cyber thieves targeted Xbox Live gamers.
The thieves have allegedly stolen millions of pounds through phishing emails after they hacked into Xbox Live accounts.
The emails they sent to Xbox Live customers, which offered free Microsoft Points if they logged in with their Xbox Live login details. Once the customers had done so, the criminals then had access to the account enabling them to steal credit card information.
A statement from Microsoft reveals what they say happened, apparently it wasn’t a breach of security, it was customers unknowingly giving other people access to their accounts.
“Microsoft can confirm that there has been no breach to the security of our Xbox LIVE service. In this case, a number of Xbox LIVE members appear to have recently been victim of malicious ‘phishing’ scams.”
Microsoft are working closely with customers who were affected in an attempt to get the situation resolved as quickly as possible.
