Facebook Subscribe button to rival Twitter

    Rhys - September 15th, 2011 10:22 AM

Facebook has just announced the ‘Subscribe’ feature which will start appearing in the next few days.

The Subscribe button goes after Twitter by allowing you to ‘subscribe’ (or follow) celebrities or people who you may not know, without submitting a stalkerish friend request. The public updates they then make can be seen by you and commented on (if they’ve set it to allow).

People can only be subscribed to as long as they have the ‘Subscribe’ button on their profile, which is an opt-in feature. Anyone is allowed the new button on their profile. To let people subscribe to you, you can sign up on the Facebook Subscribe Page.

One really interesting feature of the subscribe button is that is allows you to customize your newsfeed. At last there’s a way to destroy all those farmville updates or depressing status’ from the other half you just split up with. There are three tiers available for updates on your newsfeed, which you can by going to someone’s profile.

  • All updates: Everything your friend posts
  • Most updates: The amount you’d normally see
  • Important updates only: Just highlights, like a new job or move
