Researchers have claimed that they have set a new world record for data transfers over a large area. Data was transmitted at a  rate of 186Gbps, so fast that it could transfer 2m gigabytes of data or 100,000  Blu-ray movies in one day.

The tests included transferring bits of  data between the Universities in British Columbia, and the Washington State Convention Centre in Seattle. By comparing to the fastest UK public connection speed, there is a 1.5Gbps broadband connection trialed by Virgin Media. According to the results of the test, it will help open up new ways to transport large amounts of data that currently travel via optical fibre networks.

“Having these tools in our hands allows us to engage in realisable visions others do not have. We can see a clear path to a future other cannot yet imagine with any confidence,” spoke Prof Newman.

At Cern the team of scientists who have been working on the particle accelerator have so far processed, distributed and analysed more than 100 petabytes of data – over four million Blu-ray discs – in their search for a better idea regarding time and space. The amounts of data exchanged everyday are predicted to climb as the team increases their efforts and it is essential to be able to share the data with researchers around the world. Enabling people like scientists anywhere in the world to work on the LHC data is a main idea behind the project as it look to clear some of the  biggest mysteries of the universe.

Later this year, researchers set a new world record for the rate of data transfer using a single laser and at those speeds, the contents of nearly 1,000 high-definition DVDs could be sent down an optical fibre in a second.

So whats your take on faster internet speeds? Would you like to see them being rolled out across the UK and do you think hard drives could take such fast speeds? Leave a comment below!
