Today Apple released their official stats for a year of downloads from the iTunes App Store. In its first 12 months it reached a colossal figure of 1.5 billion downloads.

The iTunes App store provides third party add-ons or ‘apps’ for both iPhones and iPod Touches, one contributor to the stores success is the fact that iPod Touch/iPhone users can access the store direct from their device.

"The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, he then went on to say "With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up."

The app store currently has more than 65,000 apps available and has over 100,000 developers signed up to the iPhone developer program.
