The mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has teamed up with Spectrum Interactive and announced that they’re hoping to bring free Wi-Fi to the masses, with a large-scale trial beginning in London.
The trial will bring 26 free Wi-Fi hotspots the City of London, with the technology being rolled out officially in early 2012 if the trials are a success.
The trial will last for two months and has been put in place to assess how consumers interact with the new service. As well as this, Nokia and Spectrum Interactive are also hoping to see how much demand there is for free Wi-Fi in London.
Speaking about the trial, John Nichols, Head of Marketing at Nokia, said: “On-the-go internet access has become an indispensable part of modern life.”
“From tourists finding their way around the capital, to commuters updating Facebook or browsing on the move, we all depend on mobile to share our everyday experiences and enhance our lives.”
“Nokia is pleased to sponsor this pilot which we hope will connect people even more easily than ever before.”
To use the Wi-Fi all you need to do is log onto a network and accept the terms and conditions. Nokia claim that the speeds of the network are up to 20Mbps and this is acheived by installing equipment in phone boxes owned by Spectrum Interactive.
I’d like to see someone actually receive 20Mbps though, with the amount of people that are going to be logging on to the network, I doubt many will see past 4 or 5Mbps.
