The world’s top graphics card and mainboard manufacturer, MSI, released its R4890 Cyclone OC series graphics card with 800 stream processors and 1GB GDDR5 256bit memory. MSI R4890 Cyclone OC series is the only HD 4890 graphics card in the market that has a 10 cm extra large PWM fan. Because of the low rotation rate of the big fan and the 8 mm SuperPipe, this card is quiet and stays cool. MSI R4890 Cyclone OC series is equipped with Military Class components, such as Hi-c CAP, SSC (Solid State Choke) and solid capacitors, to stabilize the GPU’s power supply and extend the life span. Because of the great improvement in cooling and high quality components, MSI R4890 Cyclone OC can reach a core speed of more than 1GHz while overclocking.

Breaking the 1GHz OC limit

Thanks to the great innovations in cooling and high quality components, MSI R4890 Cyclone OC can reach a core speed of more than 1GHz when being overclocked. Besides the MSI R4890 Cyclone OC MSI also offers a 1GHz factory clocked card called R4890 Cyclone SOC.

Cyclone Thermal Design

The MSI R4890 Cyclone OC is equipped with a 10 cm PWM fan, which is the largest fan on the HD 4890 graphics card market. Because of the large size fan, it reduces much of the heat under a low fan rotation rate. Therefore, the cooling efficiency is very high and the noise level under full operation is low.

SuperPipe Technology

The MSI R4890 Cyclone OC comes with MSI’s unique SuperPipe Technology. MSI’s unique SuperPipe technology uses 8mm thick heat pipes which are 60% thicker than traditional ones and increase the cooling efficiency by 90%.

Military Class Components – Hi-c CAP

Military Class Components – Hi-c CAP For the best stability and longest lifespan, MSI R4890 Cyclone is equipped with the next generation solid capacitors: Hi-C Caps. This feature ensures high voltage derating and they are resistant to heat. During overclocking, the MSI R4890 Cyclone OC provides a stable performance.

Military Class Components – SSC (Solid State Choke)

MSI R4890 Cyclone OC series carries brand new all-in-one solid state chokes. These anti buzz chokes decrease the high-frequency buzz noise caused by traditional chokes when running under high electrical currents. SSC is capable of managing 30% higher currents than traditional chokes. This capability is crucial for maintaining stability when overclocking.

Military Class Components – Solid CAP

The solid and liquid capacitors both store and discharge electricity when needed. Solid capacitors have a longer lifespan and a more stable current than liquid capacitors. Therefore MSI R4890 Cyclone OC is equipped with solid capacitors.

CoolIT Domino i5 Testing

Back in July this year we tested the CoolIT watercooling kit using a heavily overclocked AMD 7750+ BE. It’s performance really surprised us with it absolutely caning the other coolers in question. However, processors have quickly moved on since July and we’ve got the likes of the Intel Core i7 and recent i5 dominating the market. For this reason, we thought some i5 testing using our trusty CoolIT Domino was in order. Let’s see if the performance from the Domino still survives in this day and age…
