The latest product launch from Apple has been one of the most successful in its history with over 3 million iPads shipping in the first three days. However, new iPad users are reporting that their iPad is overheating quite a bit.

Apple responded to a recent test, in which an iPad was recording a temperature of 92.5 degrees, by saying that it wasn’t a cause for concern because it fell “well within our thermal specifications” of 32-95 degrees. However, just a few hours after that statement, a new record was set at 116 degrees, which if correct is an extremely worrying temperature.

The tests, performed by Consumer Reports, state that the new ipad becomes nearly 13 degrees hotter than the iPad 2 when you’re playing games. They also used a thermal imaging camera to show how much hotter the new iPad gets.

As you can also see, the thermal images tally up with reports that the bottom left corner tends to become much hotter than the rest of the device.

Consumer Reports said: “The hottest areas weren’t evenly distributed throughout the iPad’s back, but were concentrated near one corner of the display as shown in the images taken from the rear of the device above.”

“During our tests, I held the new iPad in my hands. When it was at its hottest, it felt very warm but not especially uncomfortable if held for a brief period.”

It will definitely be interesting to see what Apple has to say about the new iPad running 20 degrees higher than they state is “safe”, but until then we’ll just have to hope it doesn’t get any hotter!

The original statement from Apple also stated that if customers had any concerns they should contact AppleCare.
