Apple’s success over the iPhone moving to be a gaming platform has shaken Sony up and sources say a release of a new PSP is now very likely.

Sony pondered on the idea of combining a handheld gaming device with a mobile phone. However, this idea has been scrapped for the new PSP as Sony believes a PSP with more advanced features is still a viable product.

If Sony is serious about a new PSP, they better get busy and start working as developers are quickly devoting their limited resources to newer platforms. This is one reason why Sony has not seen many releases for the PSP and has left unhappiness among many PSP owners.

With over 30 million iPhones sold and a vast amount of them in the hands of gamers, the death of a dedicated handheld gaming device maybe looming even closer than Sony suspected. So would breathing life back into the PSP platform work? I guess we’ll have to wait and see…
