O2 to trial 4G network in UK
Matt - November 14th, 2011 12:40 PM
The smartphone retailer and network provider O2 has revealed that they’re going to be trialling high-speed 4G LTE networks, here in the UK, across London until June 2012.
We reported a month or so ago that 4G was being trialled down in Cornwall and also Slough, the announcement that O2 will trial the service in London marks the first plans to bring super fast mobile internet to the UK capital. 40-square kilometres of London will be serviced by 25 4G masts, which will be erected by O2.
Ronan Dunne, Chief Executive Officer of Telefónica UK said, “Today’s launch of the UK’s first 4G London trial network demonstrates our commitment to delivering 4G to our customers at the earliest opportunity, the work we are doing now will lay the foundations for our commercial 4G network when it launches in the UK.”
Around 1000 people are to be included in the 4G trials in London, with each being given a Samsung branded 4G dongle so that they can access the 100Mbps connection.
With speeds of up to 100Mbps, the beta testers are going to have access to quite a decent amount of speed. Are you one of the 1000 people that will be included in the trial? Let us know in the comments section below.
