PCI Express 3.0 delayed
Richard - August 22nd, 2009 3:42 PM
The release of the PCI Express 3.0 specification has been delayed until the second quarter of 2010. This has a knock on effect for products being released that use the specification, so as a result any products that use the specification won’t be seen until 2011. We were due to see the release of the new spec sometime this year, then products using the new spec would be available around a year later.
According to Al Yanes, the president of the SIG, there have been problems with the backwards compatability for current PCI Express standards. He then went onto to say that despite the fact that PCI Express 3.0 adds so much more capability but as it needs to remain backwards-compatible it is taking longer than expected. Apparently success has been made with moving the old 8-bit and 10-bit encoding to 128-bit and 130-bit encoding. It appears the delays are mainly due to the verification process of products in the lab.
