PS3 Slim Officially Announced
Richard - August 19th, 2009 2:46 PM
Sony today officially revealed the PS3 Slim. The PS3 Slim is a smaller, more compact version of the PlayStation 3. It’s 36% lighter, 32% smaller and has 34% less power consumption.
The black mirror-polished finish and silver lining have been scrapped, which is a shame considering how good looking the console was.
Specs wise the PS3 slim has 120GB 2.5” 5400RPM hard drive, it’s also features a new 45nm IBM Cell Processor instead of the 65nm found in the current console. The graphics processor has remained at the same size of 65nm. Performance is reported to be the same as the launch day models. Also expect the new PS3 Slim to be cheaper that its predecessors.
Sadly, it has also been reported that the console will not feature Linux support as the option to “Install Other OS” has been removed from the XMB model. The reason cited for this is that Sony is trying to cut down on piracy and so by not allowing Linux, can remove some loopholes and exploits.
Another feature missing from the console is PS2 game support, SCEA’s director of marketing, John Koller says that the PS3 is now three years into its life cycle and that 80% to 90% of users play only PS3 games on their console.
The new console is expected to hit the shops in the first week of September. It will have a price tag of £249/$299/€299.
