There isn’t much that Marvel hasn’t managed to inspire, spin-off and monetise over the past few years thanks to the vast array of characters, heroes and villains and fictional worlds that have made their way from the pages of their iconic comic books and been put up on the big screen for our entertainment. It’s an unstoppable brand and it has also managed to spawn plenty of interesting and addictive video games over the years all set within the Marvel universe. But which ones have kept players coming back for more?
THE INCREDIBLE HULK: ULTIMATE DESTRUCTION
Sometimes you just want to smash things. So forget the gameplay, the plot and the characterisations as this classic outing gave us exactly what we had been craving from our mean green hero. Hulk could finally race around and smash things up and cause as much destruction and mayhem as he possibly could. The game’s plot itself was a little long-winded but when you’re smashing buses and cars and utilising special attacks called the Critical Atomic Slam and the Critical Thunderclap you certainly won’t mind.
MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2: NEW AGE OF HEROES
At the turn of the century we were treated to the long-awaited follow-up to beat ‘em up crossover ‘Marvel vs. Capcom’. The sequel ‘New Age of Heroes’ once more pitted characters from the Capcom video game franchise against numerous heroes and villains from Marvel Comics. The game worked very much like ‘Street Fighter II’ with two characters facing each other and battling it out. It featured a number of familiar Marvel faces such as Spider-Man, Rocket Raccoon, Doctor Doom and most of ‘The Avengers’ and is still a cult classic to enjoy playing even to this day.
X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE – Uncaged Edition
The Wolverine character has appeared more times than any of the other X-Men gang and so of course he thoroughly deserves a half-decent video game adaptation to be made. This origins game came alongside the release of the rather lacklustre movie of the same name and even though some versions of this game were also falling short of our expectations it was the ‘Uncaged Edition’ that really impressed. Hugh Jackman lends his voice once more to the title character as he heads out on a bloody violent rampage against his enemies.
THE INCREDIBLE HULK SLOT
This 5 reel, 50 payline slot game is the latest in a long line of Marvel themed slot games produced by Playtech. The Incredible Hulk slot comes with a progressive jackpot, in fact it comes with four of them, the Power Jackpot, the Extra Power Jackpot, Super Power Jackpot and the Ultimate Power Jackpot. The game also includes all the scatter and wild symbols we would expect from a Playtech effort including a special Smash Bonus round. In the bonus round, activated on reels 1 and 5 by the Smash Bonus symbol, the Hulk is centre stage smashing cars and helicopters in order to win prizes and cash-raising multipliers.
