Everything Everywhere, who own both Orange and T-mobile, have confirmed that they hope to rollout 4G, for the UK, before 2013, however it will only be for a handful of cities at first.
Everything Everywhere’s Mat Sears, who is Head of Communications, stated that whilst they’re hoping to get 4G rolled out in a few select places before 2013 the technology would not be available for new smartphones at first, with some form of dongle being the first UK 4G receiver.
“We expect, certainly when we launch, we hope to be the first network out there but it will be a small number of cities, a small handful of cities likely or certainly areas, and we expect that to be dongle based.”
“Generally tech like this when they launch whether it’s 3G or HSDPA+, the tech gets embedded into dongles first of all and then they move it onto handsets.”
As you might have heard, Vodafone and O2 weren’t too happy about Everything Everywhere’s decision to rollout out 4G by 2013. Because of this they filed a complaint with Ofcom that it would give the Orange and T-mobile an unfair advantage in the 4G market, however Ofcom decided that it would not give Everything Everywhere an unfair advantage and it would most likely bring benefits to consumers.
Ofcom had this to say on the matter:
“This is something that has been mandated by the EU, that network operators around the country should be allowed to use their spectrum for whatever technology they see fit.”
Well, it appears that we’re one step closer to receiving some decent mobile connections here in the UK. Will you be using the new 4G technology once it hits major cities across the UK? Let us know in the comments below.
