The Software and Features
The first utility included with the Synology DS100J is ‘Synology Assistant’. The main screen allows you to manage all Synology NAS devices, connect to them and also monitor resources. In Synology Assistant you can also install a printer connected to the NAS as a network printer and also Map a connected drive so that it appears in My Computer. For managing folders and files this is the simplest method.
By typing the NAS’ IP Address in your web browser you are directed to the login screen for the device. After logging in, you are given three menu options: Management, Download Station, Online Resources.
By clicking ‘Management’ you are directed to the DS110J’s most useful screen. In this page you can manage every single feature that the NAS offers. Furthermore, you can change the NAS’ main system settings, change/add privileges and also monitor usage stats and logs.
The ‘Download Station’ menu is the BitTorrent feature of the Synology. It is very similar to torrent clients such as uTorrent. Within this you can add torrents for the NAS to download and change torrent settings. I found this feature very useful as you can queue up many torrents to download overnight and simply leave the NAS downloading – without your computer needing to be on.
The second utility included with the DS110J is ‘Synology Download Redirector’. Quite simply all this software does is allow you to add torrents for the NAS to download without having to add them using the web-based ‘Download Station’ .
The third included utility is called ‘Synology Data Replicator 3’. This is the program which most people are going to find the most useful. Using this utility you can backup your system to the NAS, restore your system from a saved backup and view backup logs. For a quick and simple backup solution this utility is beneficial.
