F-Secure Freedome VPN Software Application Review

App Reviews, Reviews

Security and privacy is something we take for granted, however in todays online world it’s something that’s easily taken away from you. VPN applications and services have been around for a long time, but the F-Secure Freedome app states it’s a new kind of simple, but powerful, online privacy and security app. Let’s take a closer look.

Software Overview

Available in a wide range of formats, including a Windows and Mac version as well as Android and iOS, Freedome is compatible with many devices.

All that is required to get the application on your device is to download the software via the Freedome website.

F-Secure offer the software on a 14-day free trial, whereafter you will need to pay. The pricing structure is extremely reasonable, with the most basic option (1 year, 1 device) coming in at £31.99.

Even the pricing options that cover more than one device are considerably cheaper than some other VPN services, when working out the sometimes pricey monthly costs of some services.

Once you’ve installed Freedome, the only thing needed to set up the software so that it’s ready to go is you. A simple click on the “Protection OFF” button in the centre of the app and away you go.

Below the on/off button, there’s also a drop down menu listing available countries you can connect using. Selecting one of these options effectively masks your actual connection, meaning that you’re completely hidden to prying eyes.

The next tab down is “Browsing Protection” – this can be turned on or off depending on your preference.

Browsing protection stops suspicious and harmful websites from accessing your data, and also harming your computer. The number of websites that look harmless, but really pack a punch, is quite alarming so knowing the Freedome can also help protect you and your computer is quite a relief.

If you didn’t already know, advertising on websites is based on the websites that you visit. For example, if you frequent a lot of online gambling websites then you’ll most likely see a lot of advertisements about free spins, deposit bonuses and various other adverts to tempt you to sign up to other gambling websites.

Tracking protection blocks attempts from companies to collect information about your website habits. As well as this, you will also be protected from hackers who could use tracking information to target you and potentially phish data from you.

The private search option, within Freedome, is a similar feature to Tracking Protection. The private search feature will stop search engines from storing your search terms and IP address, and also stop them tracking you using cookies. With information like this, major search engines will end up knowing more about your internet habits, interests and how you think more than some of your closest friends and family.

Protection Log

All of the above features can also be compiled in to one detailed report on how you’re being tracked whilst online. The Protection Log feature of Freedome can be enabled at any time. It will enabled a 24-hour log of your activity and then create a log detailing tracking attempts and show you them on an interactive map! Crazy stuff. Now it’s your turn to spy on the advertisers.

You will need to set your virtual location to Germany, UK or US, during the beta, for the Protection Log to work.

The detailed log will show a visualisation of all blocked tracking attempts, as well as allowing the user to see and analyse the tracking attempts. The way that the animated map works is by showing the websites that have been visited, the cookies that have tried to track you, you’ll also see the amount of times a website has attempted to track you.

A very good glimpse in to the world of cookies and how companies try to track you to ultimately try and sell you products and grab your attention.

The settings screen is relatively simple and only features a few settings. You’ve got options to have Freedome start automatically when you turn your PC on, have Freedome automatically turn Protection on and also to show connection notifications. You can also select the language you’d like the software to run in. We’re obviously choosing English, however there are 17 other languages that can be selected. More information is available on the Freedome website.

As previously mentioned, F-Secure provide a 14 day free trial with Freedome so that you can take it for a test drive and see whether it’s something you’d be interested in using for longer. The subscription page provides an “active” indicator and also the days remaining on your trial. You’ve also got a “Buy now” button and a box to input your activation code if you’ve already purchased the application.

If you get stuck with anything on the application during your trial, you’ve got the Help section right at the bottom as well. Here you can select links to the FAQ, provide feedback regarding the application and also read about Freedome.

You’ll also notice the App Store icons where the app has received at the very least 4/5 on all platforms.

Testing & Verdict

I’ve previously been a user of VPN services, with some costing £7.99 per month. When added up, I’ve paid nearly £100 over a 1 year period compared to Freedome’s £31.99 for a one year plan. That’s a saving of nearly £70 compared to my previous VPN provider!

Freedome offers privacy and protection, wi-fi security (meaning you can connect to any hotspot and surf with peace of mind that your internet traffic can’t be viewed by any snoopers on the network), the ability to access geo-restricted content and the ability to control your online privacy at the click of a button.

As well as these great features, Apple Watch users can also use their device to turn the protection feature on or off on their mobile device.

I was very impressed with how easy to use and how well everything is laid out within the app. Each section is explained well, meaning that even the least technically minded person should be able to use Freedome.

The simple location selector and on/off button makes connecting to a virtual host extremely easy. We’d personally like to see a wider selection of virtual hosts and also the language selection expanded a bit more, however I’m sure we’ll see these added in future updates.

With the option of a 14-day trial and no obligation to carry on after that, F-Secure’s Freedome VPN software should definitely be tried out!

After carefully reviewing our experience with Freedome, we can safely say that it has been an absolute pleasure and we highly recommend all VPN users to give it a try! 9/10
