First Impressions

When you open up the software (which is relatively speedy on Vista Home Premium,) it becomes clear that Ad-Aware have made a real effort to make the aesthetics of the software live up to their name – the program is very similar in layout to Ad-Aware Pro, except with this game version the most noticeable difference are the game-themed skins. You get the option of a retro-themed arcade style skin, or the ‘fantasy’ skin where a wizard is your scan system, a tower for ad-watch etc. While some minimalists could argue that these are a little superficial and unnecessary, personally I think the skins are a nice touch that add a little variety to a UI that could otherwise be a little boring, and give the impression immediately that this is a well thought out product – yes, looks do matter sometimes!

Looks aside, the software has a clean interface with clear ways to access the most important settings. The number of new viruses and pieces of spyware discovered every day is almost exponential, so it is no wonder that the web update button is clear and obvious. In addition to this, there is an option for the program to automatically update itself, which most regular users would be well advised to follow. I have very few complaints with regards to the layout, although I do think that at times, even on the ‘simple mode’ there are more blocks of text than there needs to be.
