Going inside the Novatech Ion System…

To delve into the innards of the Novatech Ion you’ll need to snip a cable tie located at the rear and remove a single screw. Once inside you will notice that it’s very compact inside.

The power supply is located towards the right rear of the chassis (from photo) and has a fan mounted inside to help exhaust hot air. The fan installed is protected with a wire fan grill to reduce the risk of cables or loose objects from entering the 150w unit.

The main component inside the chassis is the Foxconn 945S04 motherboard. For expansion cards the board has a single PCI socket – located towards the PSU side of the motherboard.

There is a single DDR2 slot onboard the Foxconn motherboard. This is located beneath the 5.25” Optical Drive and so is difficult to locate without removing the drive cage. The 1GB stick which occupies the slot can easily be upgraded to a 2GB stick instead should you wish.

Bringing cool air into the chassis is an 80mm fan. The airflow from this fan directly cools the main components as they are positioned at the forefront of its flow. Sitting closest to the fan is a heatsink which has the Single Core Intel Atom 230 CPU sat beneath and the next heatsink in-line is for the Intel Chipset.
