Installation and Bios Settings

Test System

Processor

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping

Memory

OCZ Platinum Triple Channel 3 x 2GB(IN REVIEW)

Motherboard

Asus P6T SE

Graphics Card

Sapphire 512mb 4850 Vapor-X

Power Supply

Tagan 680W Super Rock

Operating System

Windows XP X64

Please note that you WILL need a 64bit version Operating System to make use of 6 GB of RAM. 32-bit OS’ can only recognise 3.2 GB.

Installing the RAM is very simple and just involves inserting the modules into the desired memory slots. But please be aware, on X58 motherboards the memory locations are very different from traditional motherboards. Instead of the first RAM stick being slotted into the slot closest to the CPU, it’s slotted into the second slot. Then the second stick goes in the forth slot and the third goes in the sixth slot. This will therefore enable the OCZ memory to work in Triple Channel.

As with many high-end memory modules, the OCZ Platinum sticks automatically default to much slower speeds than their advertised to enable the memory to POST in any system. The speeds these sticks default to are DDR3-1066 speeds (533 MHz) at a mere 1.5v.

Therefore, the first thing I changed after installing the RAM was the memory settings. I managed to kick the speeds up to its rated DDR3-1600 (800 MHz) speeds and also altered the DRAM voltage to 1.66 (the sticks are rated at 1.65, but my motherboard increments in values of 0.02v). Shortly after, I changed the timings to match the rated CAS 7 timings (7-7-7-24).

No surprises here, but my Test System managed to POST with the memory configured to its rated speeds and timings.
