PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750 Watt

The unit itself is certainly quite a big fella. It measures in at 18cm in length; this is about 2cm over a standard ATX power supply. This size reflects the weight as it’s relatively heavy. For those of us who believe the phrase ‘bigger is better’ or ‘weight equals quality’ this is a positive aspect. However, for users willing to mount this unit in their flimsy or Micro-ATX case, this may not be possible.

From instantly looking at the Silencer you can see it entails a dark grey exterior with a matt finish. This is nothing special, but is certainly a bonus when comparing it to the awful grey that power supplies use to come in.

The right-side of the PC Power and Cooling boasts two stickers: one gives the serial number and revision code; the other has some generic test stickers. Usually we’d expect to find the power specifications sticker on this side. This isn’t the case and instead it is located atop the PSU along with an 80 Plus and SLI Ready sticker.

Moving to the opposing side you can see that it’s completely bare – bar from a grill which has been cut into the side of the unit. This grill is oddly located, as for most people, it would be located on the non-visible side of the power supply when mounted in your chassis. This means that there is a very limited amount of air which can be drawn through this grill.

The front is dominated by an 80mm fan, power socket and power switch. PC Power and Cooling believe that an 80mm fan is the correct cooling solution for a PSU. If it is, many other power supply manufacturers are doing the wrong thing, so who knows? Either way, if this 80mm fan is of the same nature as the one found in the Turbo Cool, it ought to be quiet anyway.

Finally, the rear of the Silencer 750W sports a number of slatted grills – this too is odd as it has been proven that honeycomb grills have the least air resistance. However, these grills do have a real industrial look about them which some may like.
