The Scythe Mugen 2 CPU Cooler
As you can see, the Scythe Mugen 2 is a tower format CPU cooler. This design has proved popular amongst enthusiasts for many years now due to the lower temperatures this format commonly achieves.
In true Scythe style, the Mugen 2 certainly packs size. It measures in at a massive 130 x 100 x 158 mm whilst also weighing 870g (with fan attached). If you’re one who believes ‘bigger is better’, you’ll certainly like this cooler.
The overall heatsink is constructed from aluminium and consists of five ‘sinks which all have 6mm copper heatpipes running through them. These pipes bend towards the base of the Scythe and have the purpose of distributing heat from the base to the aluminium fins.
All of the heatpipes flow through the 46 aluminium fins until eventually protruding from the top fin. The raw ends have then been capped with aluminium ‘bolt-style’ ends for a more stylish finish.
The base of the Mugen 2 is constructed in a three part structure: base plate (contact point), heatpipes and finally, additional heatsink. The base plate is bonded directly to the heatpipes using thermal glue and so is not a direct-heatpipe solution which is used on many upcoming CPU coolers.
Every enthusiast knows a shiny base can improve temperatures; however, one issue which is often overlooked and is just as important – if more – is how flat the surface is. To achieve a shiny surface, one such method is to sand with a very fine sandpaper and then to polish rigorously. But this can actually worsen temperatures, as the base then becomes lumpy and not flat. Fortunately, the Scythe boasts a mirror finish and is incredibly both level and flat. Standing my two pence piece up wasn’t a chore at all.
The fan included with the Scythe Mugen 2 is a 120 x 120 x 25mm Scythe Slip Stream.
