Testing and Results

To test the SteelSeries 5H v2 headset’s sound quality I used it in a mixture of media scenarios (in-game, whilst listening to music and watching a movie). I also tested the microphone by speaking to friends in Teamspeak.

In-Game

I used the SteelSeries headset in Battlefield 2 with Teamspeak. I could easily hear my fellow soldiers easily and they could clearly hear me. The game sounds were very realistic and sounded much better through the headset than through my Logitech Z4 Speakers.

Watching Movies

‘Tears of the Sun’ was my choice of movie to test the SteelSeries with. This highly action packed Bruce Willis film features explosions, gun shots, the works. Although the sound quality was exceptionally clear, it lacked depth and bass.

Music

I tested the headset using a mixture of musical genres. Like I found in the music testing, the 5H v2’s were certainly lacking bass. But realistically, this is all personal preference so I cannot be the decider of whether it offers enough bass or not.

What I can conclude though is that the headset doesn’t offer anywhere near the quality of sound driven from headsets such as Bose ones. But being priced at over £150 for a decent set of Bose headphones, this is hardly surprising.

Microphone

As noted under the ‘In-game’ heading, the microphone quality was exceptionally clear. For full proof of this I recorded a sample of the quality using Microsoft’s ‘Sound Recorder’. You can play the sample by downloading it by clicking HERE.

Comfort

Usually I do not like using a headset for a long period of time as it can often feel after wearing it that your ears have been pushed inside your head. This isn’t the case with the SteelSeries 5H v2. Its thick cushioning and minor clamping force meant I could wear the headset for the whole day – without any quibbles at all!
