The Software

SteelSeries provide very little in the box, (no doubt in order to go with the minimalistic image of the mouse) so with just a small how to guide in various languages and the mouse itself, the user is left to download this off the manufacturer’s website.

The software; ‘Kinzu Configuration,’ does everything you’d expect it to from a compact window, where you can directly change the Windows mouse settings as well as the DPI or report rate of the mouse (note: although the mouse does work with Macs, obviously the software does not).

As the below screenshot shows, you can change the settings for each of the inbuilt profiles in the mouse (just clicking on the different numbers shows a page exactly the same as this, where you can change settings accordingly.

The options menu is rather self explanatory – again, a functional interface, but rather basic.

I could be accused of being overly picky here, but if you look closely you can see that the corners of the actually window are not rounded very well. Of course, this is only visible upon close inspection, but it does make you wonder if SteelSeries could put as much effort into the software as they did in the mouse itself.

Miscellaneous Points

Another feature of this mouse which really impressed me was that the fact that the Kinzu stores the profiles your computer uses on the mouse. Bearing in mind that the mouse makes use of Plug ‘n’ Play, this could be a lifesaver – say you’re using someone else’s system, or perhaps you have a second rig yourself, all you’d have to do would be to pull out the USB and stick it into the other computer. This is a neat trick of the mouse, and adds to the already sterling performance Steelseries has proved so far.

On a more negative note, one final thing, is that even after the drivers had installed themselves after first plugging the mouse in, when I put the mouse in again (and I did this a few times on different occasions) it took a surprisingly long time for it to be recognised, which seemed a little odd.
