Testing
There isn’t a massive lot of testing which can be carried out, so this section will be short and sweet. To begin with, we’ll start off by trying to open three popular file types: PowerPoint Presentation (.pptx), Word Document (.docx) and JPEG Image (.jpg). Of course NetPortal can open many other files, but we’ll just test these main three.
Starting with the PowerPoint Presentation, clicking the file brings you to a short loading screen while the file is loaded from your computer. Once loaded, you can see that the Presentation’s slides are joined, so you can simply keep scrolling vertically through the whole presentation.
Microsoft Word Documents work in exactly the same way, being that the individual pages are joined allowing you to scroll through the whole document. For both Word and PowerPoint files, there is a host of controls available at the bottom of the screen, from left to right, these include:
- Copy File and Email File
- Show Bookmarks folder
- Add file to Bookmarks
- Go to Top of Document
- Scroll Up
- Scroll Down
- Go to Bottom of Document
Opening JPEG Images is indeed similar, however, you are given less controls. All four scrolling buttons are removed and instead you are given a link to return to ‘Home’, which is simply the same as ‘My Computer’ in Windows. As with the Word Document and Powerpoint Presentation, you can zoom in and out of JPEG files by using Apple’s ‘pinching’ technique.
One of the most useful features I find in NetPortal is its ability to copy files from your computer to the iPhone’s hard drive. This is very simple and I shall explain the process. Firstly, you need to open the file you wish to copy and then press the ‘Action’ button (the arrow in a box). This brings you to a menu, where you can either carry out a ‘Quick Copy’ (copy the file to the root disk on the iPhone), copy to file to a specific folder or email the file as an attachment. After selecting the second option (Copy file to a local folder), a prompt is displayed which instructs you how to paste the file. You then need to navigate to the folder you wish to copy the file to on the iPhone and then press the action menu button and paste option.
The ‘Quick Copy’ option is very similar, but simply copies the selected file to the iPhones hard drive without manually selecting a specific folder. Finally, the email option adds the selected file as an attachment for sending to recipients.
