The Veho Pebble Smartstick+, that we’re testing today, is the limited edition Ayrton Senna edition, which means that with each sale of the Pebble Veho will make a contribution to the Ayrton Senna Institute. A very worthwhile cause, in our opinion. This compact portable charger has a 3000mAh battery, which should be more than capable of giving your device a boost after a long YouTube binge session. Let’s take a closer look.
It’s a relatively simple-looking product, which is very slim, round and portable, making it ideal for those of you with a lack of space to carry a larger portable charger.
The Pebble has an all-metal body, which is quite nice considering the amount of plastic-y products on the market. At least with a metal body you know you won’t be able to easily damage or break this charger.
Unscrewing the cap at the end of the charger will reveal a microUSB port and standard USB port, the former being for charging the Pebble and the latter for charging your devices.
The screw cap features a handy karabiner, for securing the charger to places such as your belt, bag or even just a jacket zip pocket.
Included with the Veho Pebble Smartstick+ are a number of accessories, including:
- The portable charger
- 1x USB charging cable
- 3x Charging connectors for a variety of different devices (unfortunately a lightning adapter is not included)
- 1x Karabiner
- 1x Carry pouch
- 1x Limited Edition Ayrton Senna collector’s badge
- A user manual
As mentioned above, the only charging adapters that are included are a microUSB, miniUSB and an iPhone 30-pin connector. A shame that a lightning adapter isn’t included, but there’s not really an issue if you just use your current lightning cable instead.
I tested the Veho Pebble Smartstick+ portable charger whilst away in Spain, an ideal location considering I was travelling around quite a bit and didn’t always have access to a wall charger.
At the time of testing I was using my old iPhone 6, which only featured a 1810mAh battery.
The Pebble’s capacity is 3000mAh, which means that I was more than able to get a full charge and a bit extra during testing. It’s worth noting that whilst I managed to get a full charge, I quickly realised that using your device whilst it was charging was not advisable because the output really wasn’t good enough to handle this. Therefore I ended up having to stop using my phone whilst it was connected to the charger, just so I could speed up the charging process a little.
This is by no means something that caused a major issue, because I still managed to get a full charge out of it, but it was a little annoying at times when I wanted to listen to some music and couldn’t because it would affect how much my battery was being charged.
On my current iPhone 7 Plus, which has a battery capacity of 2900mAh, the Pebble was not much use, but if you have a smartphone that requires a lot of power you’d want to be looking for a much more powerful portable charger anyway because a 3000mAh charger isn’t going to increase the iPhone 7 Plus battery much at all.
In terms of recharging the Pebble, this took around 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours when plugged in to the wall. Which isn’t too bad. If time is an issue then there’s no real problem with plugging it in before bed and leaving it overnight.
Overall for smartphones and tablets that don’t require a massive amount of power or have extremely large battery capacities, the Veho Pebble Smartstick+ would be an ideal addition to your travel tech collection.
It’s very slim, portable and has a very handy karabiner for securing to different places.
At the time of this review it’s only £17.99 from Mobile Fun, which is a very reasonable price. With the addition of Veho donating to the Ayrton Senna Institute, with each purchase, what more of a reason do you need for purchasing one in time for Christmas?
Despite the lack of a lightning adapter, and sometimes slow charging capabilities, the Veho Ayrton Senna Pebble Smartstick+ portable charger has earned itself a very respectable 7/10.
